In summer 1997 GEOMAR Technologie GmbH (GTG) was surveying
the coastal and harbour areas of Beirut and Tripoli in
the Lebanon. A total area of more than 250 hectars was surveyed
within eight days.
The surveys were carried out to achieve basic data for
planning and building activities of the harbours
and for reclamation of land from the sea within the coastal area.

Main task was the geophysical survey and data evaluation to achieve
information about the marine sediment.
For the shallow waters subbottom profiling a side scan sonar system was used as well
as a boomer system.
Additional interpretation and planning data are given due to the
echo-sounding measurements and the mapping of the bathymetry.
The depth rages from 4 to 45 meters.
Contour lines of bathymetry with a 0.5 meter interval revealed
in detail structures caused by bottom currents as well as
by geology of the eastern Mediterranean Sea margin.
For precise horizontal positioning Differential
Global Positioning (DGPS) was used.
